The offering of gold to the infant Jesus shows the recognition that this child, even though small and fragile, would be a true King . A king unlike Herod, who reigned in the palace of Jerusalem. Fearing that he would lose his position as King after the birth of Jesus, Herod issued a decree ordering the death of all male children under two years old who lived in his city.

To celebrate this date, several countries have created and recreated traditions , such as in Mexico, Spain, Uruguay and Argentina , where gifts are exchanged while eating "Rosca de Reyes" (King Cake).
