925 Silver and Sterling Silver: What Are They?

Silver

925 silver, also known as sterling silver, is an alloy containing 925 parts of silver per thousand, or 92.5% silver. The remaining 7.5% consists of other alloying metals.

925 silver is used in jewellery, but is not the highest level of purity. Silver 999‰, for example, has a higher silver content. Legal silver finenesses in Portugal include 999‰, 925‰, 835‰, 830‰ and 800‰.

The Portuguese expression “prata de lei” should not be taken to mean that only 925 silver is legally accepted. Check the stated fineness and technical information to understand a piece's composition.
