Official Portuguese Hallmarks
Discover the marks that identify who places a piece of jewellery on the market and guarantee the type and fineness of its precious metal.
Reading a piece of jewellery
Two marks. Two meanings.
Responsibility mark
The responsibility mark, maker’s mark or equivalent identifies the party responsible for placing a precious metal article on the market. It features a distinctive design and a letter from the person’s first name, surname or business name, clearly differentiated and enclosed within an outline.
Assay office mark
The assay office mark guarantees the type and legal fineness of the precious metal, or indicates specific circumstances provided for by law. Fineness expresses the proportion of precious metal in the alloy. The symbol varies according to the metal.
