Legal Trademarks of Portuguese Contractors
The maker's mark, manufacturer's mark or equivalent is the mark identifying the party responsible for placing the precious metal article on the market, and it reproduces a private design together with a letter from the person's first name, surname, or company name, with the design and the letter clearly distinct and enclosed within a peripheral outline.
The assay office mark reproduces the guarantee mark for the legal fineness of precious metal articles, or indicates certain circumstances, and identifies the assay office using it by the shape of its perimeter, which consists, respectively, of a curved figure or a symmetrical irregular octagon, depending on whether it is the Lisbon or Porto Assay Office (see mark designs). The symbol varies according to the metal.
